Siddhartha Gautama sat under the Bodhi tree, then slowly lowered his right hand towards the ground. At the very moment his fingers touched the dirt, he had achieved enlightenment, the hand gesture bearing witness to his triumph over worldly temptations. Buddhism began on that hot day in Bodgaya (India) nearly 2,500 years ago. It had been a long, tortuous journey for Siddhartha, born into a princely family, to renounce his royal life for asceticism and meditation to find the Four Noble Truths: that there is suffering in life, that the root of all suffering is desire, that to end desire is to end suffering, and to achieve that end, one must follow the Eightfold Path of Buddhism.
