MADAGASCAR is the world’s fourth-largest island, but it’s more like a continent—a lost one. We’ll see plants and animals found nowhere else on Earth and a unique ethnology, geology, marine life, and topography. Every year just a handful of Americans travel to the Indian Ocean, most on cruises with limited exposure to the culture. But we find the entire island so fascinating, we’ve arranged 12 nights. (We could easily stay for a month.)

Madagascar is topographically striking. The Isaho Mountains of the Southwest resemble Yosemite with wind-scoured rock formations, precipitous canyons, and hidden lakes and waterfalls. In the South close to Berenty Reserve, eerie spiny forests of Didiereacene, related to the cactus family, produce paired leaves that mimic green butterflies resting on fleshy spines. At the northern tip of Madagascar Diego Suarez shelters a forest of red limestone outcroppings, called the Red Tsingy.

For craft enthusiasts, treasures of the hand are still made the old-fashioned way: hand-made paper from the avola tree; hand and loom woven, naturally dyed textiles; carvings from hardwood and zebu bone, watertight raffia basketry; and intricate metal work in lost wax.

Highlights:

• Our 14 night/15 day itinerary showcases five (5) distinct regions:

• The capital of Antananarivo in the Highlands

• The central highlands, the rice bowl of the country

• The Horombe Plateau which supports hundreds of zebu herds of the Bara tribe.

• Isaho, like our Grand Canyon

• Perinet home to the indris, the largest of the forest dwelling lemurs whose siren calls can be heard a mile away.

Late August to early September is the start of the spring season with pleasant days and nights; precipitation is low. In September the baby lemurs are growing up in the lush national forests, birds start making their calls for the mating season, and animals that have been hibernating, start coming out.
